
About Jason
Jason A. Vandever became the City Treasurer on October 1, 2012 when longtime City Treasurer Jennifer Brown retired, and he has served in that capacity since then. On April 2, 2013 Jason won his first election, capturing 76% of the vote in a special election. In November of 2013 Jason won the general election for City Treasurer.
A Charlottesville Native
Jason was born and raised in Charlottesville, and is delighted to raise his own family here. A 2000 Advanced Studies Diploma graduate of Charlottesville High School and the president of the CHS student government, he also participated in extra curricular activities such as band, orchestra, tennis, track, and the National Honor Society. Jason received his Bachelor’s Degree from James Madison University in 2004, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a major GPA of 3.8.
Career in Finance
After graduation, Jason and his wife, Faith, relocated to Dallas, Texas following their marriage in 2005 and he began working for Wachovia Bank. While at Wachovia, Jason quickly rose through the ranks, taking on increasing levels of responsibility, serving as a Teller, Teller Manager, Teller Trainer and ultimately as Branch Manager. Under Jason’s leadership, the branch held the highest customer service rating in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and was recognized for its outstanding audit and internal control procedures.
Passionate about Public Service
While working in the private sector provided invaluable experience in finance and management, Jason longed to take the skills he acquired there and put them to greater use in public service. In 2008, he accepted the position of Chief Deputy Treasurer for the City of Charlottesville after the city conducted a national search. He earned his Master Governmental Deputy Treasurer Certification in 2010 and obtained a Master’s Certificate in Local Government Management from Virginia Tech’s Center for Public Administration and Policy in December of 2012. Additionally, he holds a Certified Public Funds Investment Manager Certificate from the Association of Public Treasurers and a Certificate in Public Plan Policy in Pensions from the International Foundation. In 2015 Jason was certified as a Master Governmental Treasurer by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service.
As City Treasurer he is responsible for all aspects of the City’s treasury functions, has been an integral part of several inter-departmental city committees, has been the primary leader for the city’s new Integrated Tax System, has played a major role in the recent revision of the city’s retirement plan, and is a graduate of the Charlottesville Leadership Development Academy.
Jason’s Family
His wife, Faith, worked as a Social Studies teacher in Irving, TX and then at Walker Upper Elementary School in Charlottesville until the birth of their son, Ethan, in 2011. In March of 2013, Jason and Faith added a little girl, Emma, to their family and in 2015 added another boy, Jackson!
